The Inverse Square Law gives any boom operator or sound mixer a guide to the relationship of intensity and audio. Having great audio is one of the many steps to creating a great film but it is definitely one of the most important. A movie is made up of picture and sound, and if the sound sucks the movie sucks. The law states that for every time the distance is doubled between the microphone and the source the sound intensity decreases by 6 decibels.
